Microsoft's VR headset to ship to developers 'within the next year'

Microsoft just launched Windows 10 on Wednesday, but it's their wireless virtual reality headset, the HoloLens, that people are really excited to get their hands on.

Now we have more of an idea of when that moment could arrive. Recent comments from Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, have indicated developers should receive the HoloLens sometime in 2016.

In an interview with the BBC posted Friday, Nadella said the company would have developer versions of the headset available first, before moving onto commercial use. "We're looking forward to getting the V1 out, which is more around developers and enterprises in the Windows 10 time frame," he added. "Which means it is within the next year."

Although Microsoft said the headset could turn your house into a "surreal gaming environment" when it launched the product in January, Nadella's comments suggest the company is prioritising enterprise use, for the moment.

As some lucky journalists got to experience earlier this year, researchers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will use the headset to virtually explore images sent back by the Mars Rover.

Sadly, it seems you won't be using the headset to watch Netflix on the go anytime soon. Nadella emphasised the company is on a five year journey with the HoloLens, so it may be awhile longer before you see it available in your local department store.
