GoPro unveils new $200 Hero+ action camera, drops Hero 4 Session to $300

It's been quite the year for GoPro. Earlier this year, the company released the Hero+ LCD and tiny cube-shaped Hero 4 Session, and now it's adding another action camera to the lineup: the Hero+.

At $199.99, the Hero+ slots in right between the entry-level $129.99 Hero and the $299.99 Hero+ LCD. GoPro's also dropped the Hero 4 Session by $100 from $399.99 to $299.99, making it even easier on the wallets of adventure junkies.

With the Hero+ addition, GoPro's family of action cameras now stands at six: three high-end Hero 4 (Hero 4 Black, Hero 4 Silver and Hero 4 Session) and three "low-end" Hero cameras (Hero+ LCD, Hero+ and Hero).

Comparing the Hero+ with its Hero+ LCD and Hero mates, you may not even key in on the differences because they're subtle.

The Hero+, like the two other entry-level GoPros, has a waterproof body with a sealed design. The back pops open for access to the Micro USB charging port and microSD card slot, but you can't remove the action camera.

The main difference between the Hero+ and the Hero+ LCD and Hero is its video resolution. It can record in two resolutions: 1080p at 60 frames per second (fps) and 720p at 60 fps. The cheaper Hero maxes out at 1080p at 30 fps, although it does do 720p at 60 fps. The Hero+ LCD does 1080p at 60 fps and 720p at 60 fps, but it costs more because it has a built-in touchscreen.

The rest of the Hero+'s specs are on par with the Hero+LCD: 8-megapixel stills, timelapse videos, burst photos at 5 fps, superview, auto low-light and built-in Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth.

GoPro's new Hero+ action camera will be available at retailers and GoPro.com starting on Oct. 4.
