Want to buy the 2017 Ford GT supercar? You'll have to be vetted first.

Ford's all-new supercar, the 2017 GT, will go on sale later this year. However, it won't be like a Focus — you won't be able to just turn up to the dealer and hope to drive away in one. It's going to be a bit more involved than that.

Before Ford will let you — yes, let you — buy one of the 250 600-horsepower supercars it aims to build by the end of 2016, you'll have to first apply online. Then you'll be scrutinized by a vetting process. Ford intends to ask things like which Fords you've owned before, how much you'll want to drive the GT as well as measure your social media engagement.

"[The application] will try to understand what your relationship with Ford is,” Raj Nair, Ford’s executive vice president told The Detroit News. “We want to prioritize people who are going to care about the car, keep the car and drive the car.”

Essentially, Ford wants to ensure true brand enthusiasts get the first stab at owning the car. It also wants the cars out on the road — and on social media — working as rolling marketing machines rather than stashed deep away in someone's gigantic car collection.

More importantly, it wants customers who won't turn around and sell the limited-run supercar for a profit. That means, even after being approved as a buyer, you'll then have to sign an agreement saying you won't sell the car for a yet-undetermined amount of time.

It's intriguing to see Ford take such a stance on the selling process of the GT — it's very Ferrari-like. The Italian supercar maker doesn't let just anyone buy one of its elite supercars; you have to be worthy. It seems, however, Ford is more concerned with getting the cars on the road, rather than squirreled away.

Regardless, if you want to be one of the first to own the all-new GT, you'll have the chance to apply sometime later this month when the application page goes live.
