Volvo's stunning compact concepts are a new take on Swedish small cars

Clearly, the days of boxy Volvos are officially behind us.

Volvo Cars debuted two new compact concepts Wednesday morning. They're called 40.1 and 40.2. Although their names are lacking in creativity, their designs certainly aren't.

The sharp Swedish sedan and crossover concepts form not only hint at Volvo's future 40 series of compact cars, it also debuts the brand's new compact platform called Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).

The forthcoming 40 series will be more than stunning to behold, they'll also be highly connected, eco friendly and safe (it's Volvo after all).

Last month, Volvo said it aims to sell 1 million electrified vehicles by 2025. The 40 series will be a large part in completing that puzzle. The 40s will be offered in full electric and plug-in hybrid variants — along with standard gasoline models.
